How to Wash and Care for Lingerie

Wash bras, lace, silk and shapewear without ruining their shape. Follow this practical guide to labels, hand washing, drying and storage.

Delicate lace lingerie being hand washed in a ceramic basin

The safest way to care for lingerie is to follow the garment label, use cool water, limit friction and air dry away from direct heat. Hand washing is often the gentlest choice. If the label permits machine washing, a mesh bag and delicate cycle reduce tangling and abrasion.

Start with the care label

The care label outranks general advice because it reflects the complete garment, including elastic, wire channels, lace, trims and dyes. The wash-tub symbol tells you whether washing is allowed and the maximum temperature. Bars beneath it indicate a gentler mechanical action. Other symbols cover bleaching, drying, ironing and professional cleaning.

Check the fibre composition too. It helps explain the feel of the garment, but construction and trims can require gentler treatment than the main fibre alone suggests.

How to hand wash bras and lingerie

  1. Separate lights, darks and strong colours.
  2. Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
  3. Fasten hooks to stop them catching on lace or mesh.
  4. Submerge the garment and gently move it through the water. Avoid scrubbing, twisting or stretching.
  5. Let it soak briefly according to the detergent guidance, then rinse thoroughly in cool water.
  6. Press out water gently between clean towels. Do not wring.

How to machine wash when the label allows it

Fasten bras and place them in a zipped mesh lingerie bag. Wash with similar colours and lightweight items on the delicate cycle. Heavy towels, denim and garments with exposed fastenings increase friction and can distort wires or cups.

Use the temperature and detergent specified on the label. Avoid fabric conditioner unless the manufacturer recommends it, as coatings can affect the performance of some stretch and moisture-handling fabrics.

Drying and storage

Reshape cups while damp and air dry flat or hang from the centre bridge so wet straps do not carry the garment’s weight. Keep lingerie away from radiators, strong direct sunlight and tumble-dryer heat unless the label explicitly permits tumble drying.

Store moulded bras upright with the cups nested naturally. Do not invert one cup into the other. Fold soft, unlined pieces without compressing wires or boning.

Care notes for common materials

  • Silk: treat as delicate and follow the label closely. Some silk garments require professional cleaning.
  • Lace and mesh: minimise snagging by hand washing or using a closed mesh bag.
  • Cotton: it may tolerate more washing, but lingerie elastic and trims still benefit from low heat.
  • Elastane: avoid unnecessary heat and harsh bleaching because stretch recovery is central to fit.
  • Shapewear: wash gently and air dry to protect high-stretch panels.

The most important rule

Heat and rough handling are the usual enemies of elastic. A cool, gentle routine is more valuable than an elaborate collection of specialist products.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash a bra?

Wash according to wear, weather, activity and personal comfort. Sports bras and pieces worn in hot conditions need washing sooner than a lightly worn everyday bra.

Can bras go in the tumble dryer?

Only when the care label permits it. Air drying is the safer default because high heat can damage elastic and distort moulded cups.

Can I use normal detergent?

Use a small amount of mild detergent suitable for the fabric. Check both the garment and detergent instructions, especially for silk and other delicate fibres.

When fit no longer returns after washing, check the signs that a bra needs replacing.
